Patient stories. LA landmarks. Dawn light. Two shoot days. Artist-crafted AI. Integrated production and post.
Patient stories, made Larger Than Life: How Hinge Digital and TILT created an emotionally cinematic journey across Los Angeles — real performances, real landmarks, AI-finished at dawn.
THE CHALLENGE
UCLA Health’s “Keep On Rising” platform is built on a simple, powerful idea: their patients’ success stories deserve to be celebrated at the scale of what they actually survived.
The brief for this campaign was cinematic and ambitious: project larger-than-life portraits of real UCLA Health patients onto the walls and landmarks of Los Angeles at dawn. City Hall. Dodger Stadium. Point Mugu. Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. The city as a canvas. Patients as monuments.
The agency and client were open to an AI enhanced workflow, with a mandate that it couldn’t look like AI. Not with real patients. Not with iconic LA locations people walk past every day. The answer lived somewhere in between — and finding it was exactly the job.
- The spot had to feel like it existed in the few luminous minutes between predawn dark and sunrise, a window that, traditionally, means multiple days of location crew chasing light.
- Real patients were the emotional core, but they weren’t available during our shoot days.
- The LA landmarks had to be instantly recognizable, not just plausible. A production that faked them would get called out immediately.
- Two shoot days. Six weeks of post. A budget that didn’t leave room for a single wasted frame.
OUR APPROACH
Working with our friends at TILT, director Kess BD and Hinge Digital’s creative team came to the brief with a clear philosophy: capture the real human moments that a camera captures best, and use AI as the finishing department that makes the impossible achievable.
Kess pitched the approach that became the campaign’s backbone: give the audience one person to follow — Sana, a healthcare worker moving through a waking Los Angeles — and let the patient portraits towering above her do the heavy lifting of scale. Scale and humanity in every frame, where there is one there must be the other. The projections had to feel physically real, grounded in actual LA light, actual LA geometry. And they had to be earned — shot on location, with real camera movement and real performances as the source.
So we shot for real: real camera moves, real LA locations, real performances, real morning light wherever the schedule allowed. And we built the rest in post — relighting entire scenes from midday to dawn, integrating patient portraits built from selfies, bringing each scene to life through careful AI prompting, traditional compositing, and frame-by-frame VFX craft our team has spent years developing.
Every shot went through a still approval before any motion was applied. Every note came back as options, not a take-it-or-leave-it. The process was built so that nothing surprised the client — and so that late requests (new signage, wardrobe changes, a bus removed from a background) could be absorbed without a reshoot.
“We had a great experience working with Hinge and director Kess on our UCLA Health campaign. The project presented unique creative and production challenges — particularly in blending live-action footage with AI-enhanced imagery while keeping the result feeling authentically human. Kess’s addition of the nurse storyline was an inspired creative choice that brought the different elements together, and Hinge’s approach to recreating real patient portraits through AI was both technically impressive and handled with real sensitivity. The collaboration between Hinge and TILT Story was thoughtful and solutions-oriented throughout, resulting in a spot well received by both agency and client. We look forward to working together again.”

THE SHOOT
Two days. Eight locations. One window of light.
We shot over two days across Los Angeles, capturing the shots that would anchor every AI-assisted scene: Point Mugu, Dodger Stadium, LA skyline, a neighborhood home, a bus, Disney Hall, UCLA campus, and the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Every location chosen for what it could become in post, not just what it was at midday.
Our hero talent, our nurse Sana, was filmed moving through the waking city: stepping out of her kitchen, boarding the bus, walking to work, entering the OR. Real camera moves on fluid heads, handheld for immediacy on the bus. Actors encouraged to improvise and interact before action and after cut, cameras rolling throughout to capture the unguarded moments that make a performance feel true.
THE PATIENT PORTRAITS
No portrait shoot. No scheduling real patients. Three selfie angles. Fully realized faces.
UCLA Health’s patients are the emotional heart of the campaign — but coordinating real patients for a two-day LA shoot was neither practical nor in the budget. So we built their portraits without one.
Patients provided selfies from three angles. From those, our team built fully realized portrait stills for each patient — adjusting pose, lighting, and background until each read as a studio-quality image worthy of projecting onto the side of a building. Multiple wardrobe options per patient, submitted for client approval before any motion was applied.
Once approved, we brought each portrait to life with subtle AI-generated movement — a gentle breath, a blink, the quality of someone who is present rather than frozen. The key was restraint: these are real people, not characters. The motion had to honor that.
THE AI + VFX PIPELINE
The entire spot needed to take place in the brief, golden-blue window between predawn darkness and sunrise — a light condition that traditionally means days of location shooting with minimal usable time per morning.
We shot in daylight and rebuilt every scene to be at dawn in post, adjusted talent wardrobe and performances, added brand signage, replaced houses with apartment buildings in moving shots, and more. These kinds of changes could typically require a reshoot or extensive VFX, our experienced artists combined AI tools and traditional VFX craft to bring all the right ingredients together for a premium result.

RELIGHT SHOTS
AI Design
For each shot, we created a hero lighting still: the entire scene relit from our daytime source plate to predawn dawn, with the sun’s position calculated accurately for each specific LA location and time of year. This was the client’s approval checkpoint — no motion was applied until the still was signed off.
INTEGRATE PATIENTS
Compositing + AI
Using the approved still as source, we brought each scene to life through a combination of traditional image compositing and targeted AI prompting. We brought patient portraits to life with subtle movements and expression, created consistent lighting across each scene, as the city wakes up around them.
ANIMATE & REVISE
Fine tuning
Addressing client notes in this AI-assisted workflow is similar to traditional VFX, with some additional considerations. As typically expected with AI, we were able to get to great looking results faster, but revisions approaching revisions takes thoughtful planning. Think of each AI generation like takes on a live action set. No two are exactly alike.
Where AI generation introduced artifacts or inconsistencies, our VFX team finished shot with traditional VFX tools: frame-by-frame tracking, roto, cleanup and color adjustments for final pixel perfection.
